10. Motorola MicroTAC Classic
Year: 1991
The first truly portable phone gained its notoriety through appearances in hip-hop videos and movies. Motorola went on to reinvent the look of the cellular by minimizing the design of the coveted brick phone and introducing the flip mechanism that became a standard for most the company’s cellulars as time progressed. Calls were much easier to screen and sounded clearer than its bigger brother.
9. Motorola V100
Year: 1999
Two-way messaging hit its stride when Moto launched the neon-blue personal communicator that also doubled as a cellular. The comfy, lightweight build and responsive keyboard made for a winning combo that only encouraged non-stop messaging amongst impulsive communicators. To quote the great Hovito: “Motorola, two-way page me!”
8. Motorola Atrix 4G
Year: 2011
Forget the gimmicky laptop dock and its wide array of useless accessories. The Atrix 4G lived up to the insurmountable hype it created when introduced at the Consumer Electroincs show, demonstrating the raw power emitted from a handset running Android and a dual-core processor. A beautiful qHD display, niche features, and swift speed rounded out the first-gen Atrix’s premiums.
7. Motorola v70
Year: 2002
Miles ahead of its time in terms of design and style, the v70 featured the glamorous details most fashion-forward mobilephiles sought—a distinct swivel function, sweet-looking curves, and white-on-black, circular panel. The neon-esque EL backlight keypad and interchangeable frames added to its swag value, letting owners customize the circular silver bezel with a gold, silver, or white variant.
6. Motorola i730
Year: 2003
If there was one handset that personified the PTT (push-to-talk) movement, that would be the i730. The Nextel-operated device carried all the signature virtues most synonymous with the brand: including real GPS, sturdy construction, and walkie-talkie service, which everyone from the most annoying tween to the overweight construction worker milked just to save their anytime minutes. A legacy was born. Chirp! Chirp!
