Talks of Microsoft releasing a 7- to 8-inch flagship tablet this year died out quick a few months back, but a new report suggests the PC giant is in fact readying its Surface Mini model for release sometime later this year year. According to Neowin, the smaller Windows 8 slate is actually ready to ship and was considered for launch last fall, but stood on the production line due to the supply chain issues with the Surface 2. So the company is still contemplating when the best time would be to launch the device.

Taking a page from Samsung’s book, Microsoft is rumored to be pushing the Surface Mini as the “ultimate note-taking device,” which would provide access to OneNote, support for a digital pen, and upgrade software tweaks. Design-wise, it’s said to bear the same look as its larger predecessors and sport the company’s patented kickstand. Analysts believe it will hit the market around the fall for back to school time. Smart call.
