In a recent interview with MTV, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn talked about the process of casting Thanos in the film. Thanos isn’t in the film for very long, but Gunn said that the actor portraying the evil alien character needed to be able to “handle the enormity of a villain as powerful as Thanos”.
According to the helmer, Josh Brolin got the role over Pauly Shore and Paul Reubens, who were both under consideration for a time. Ultimately though, Gunn’s said despite the fact that they talked about Shore for a long time, “It didn’t seem to be great”, and, “He wanted too much money.” And as far as Reubens? “He just didn’t seem to be Thanos”, Gunn stated.
Seems surprising that the three actors were under consideration for the same role, but thankfully Gunn and the rest of the crew realized that Brolin, “fit more than those other two guys”. Thanos will join the rest of the Guardians on screen in theaters today.
