Robert Rodriguez talks Sin City 2 and Machete Kills

Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez made a special appearance at this year’s SXSW Film Festival to inform attendees of his new production company, Quickdraw Productions, and give updates for two of his long-promised sequels: Sin City 2 and Machete Kills. Reports say the director promises both films will go into production sometime this year. How many times we heard that about the former?

Dating back to 2005, Sin City 2 has been trying to get off the ground, with several huge A-listers attached to the project from Angelina Jolie to Johnny Depp. Obviously that wet dream never came to fruition. All that we know about the sequel is it will feature three different stories from Frank Miller: A Dame to Kill For, along with two new (and unknown) stories.

As per Machete, Rodriguez plans a trilogy of films and has Machete Kills ready to shoot by April. The b-movie plot features Danny Trejo’s character fighting an insane cartel leader and billionaire arms deal that plan a global war with a deadly space weapon. That right there already hints at the third film’s plot (Machete Kills Again), where Rodriguez hopes to have the lead fighting monsters in outer space. Typical Grindhouse stuff. Love it.

There’s no word yet on the returning casts or projected release dates for either project. Take it from us, expect to see Machete Kills Again before getting an actual teaser for SC2. Hey, we’re not pessimists here, just realists.
