The current partnership between Renault and Caterham seems to be coming along fine, as the French car manufacturer confirms the design to its upcoming sports car is basically complete. Renault’s senior vice president of corporate design made the announcement, while also labeling the new model: “The Alpine design is as good as finished. I can’t wait for 2016. Normally you want to be young, but I want to be two years older to see it come out.”

Ironically, the new sports car will not feature the Renault nameplate, but instead will be promoted as a pure Alpine model in the company’s efforts to launch Alpine as its own brand:

“We’ve been through all the scenarios, there are pros and cons for every scenario, but to give it its due it’s probably best if it’s its own brand. We will sell as many as we can, but it will be low volume. There’s only so much room for sports cars in your life.”

The Alpine is said to come equipped with a 250hp engine, while the Caterham model will carry a 300 hp powertrain and match the 1,100 kg weight of the Alpine.
