Mazda Celebrates the MX-5 Miata with Collector's Editions

The MX-5 Miata has a perfect blend of agility and affordability has earned it eleven 10 Best titles since its introduction to the U.S. in 1989. Last year, Mazda celebrated the Miata’s 20th birthday through a face lift and minor mechanical enhancement for the production car, while also showing the badass speedster-style Superlight concept.

This year at the Geneva auto show, Mazda will mark the Miata’s second 20th anniversary—it made its European debut in 1990—with a special edition model. Limited to just 2000 copies and based on the 1.8-liter softtop model, this Euro-only version will feature stainless-steel door sills with each car’s individual number, plus an exterior chrome package that includes a new grille surround, door handles, and headlight bezels. Other touches include silver fog-light frames, unique 17-inch wheels, and special 20th-anniversary badges. A front strut-tower brace is the only chassis upgrade. Color choices are limited to True Red, Crystal While Pearl, and a new color, Aurora Blue. Probably a salute to France, since it won’t be available for the U.S.A. Whatever it is, this fine touch ultimately creates a new handle on the Miata.
