Bringing Resident Evil Back to Its Roots

Unfortunately, the Resident Evil franchise has drifted pretty far from its original formula these last couple of games. While Resident Evil 4 was a great leap forward in terms of gameplay, it also shifted the focus from the survival horror of earlier games to more straightforward action-adventure. It was a gamble that paid off vastly for its time, but by the time RE6 came around and was met with lackluster reviews, fans found themselves missing the pervasive sense of dread that animated the earlier games. The enemies in particular have gotten more ridiculous than scary. All appeal of baddies like Las Plagas and the Uroboros have worn off, and we miss the simple-but-effective T-virus zombies of the earlier entries. The success of The Walking Dead proves zombies can be cool if done right, and Resident Evil 2 definitely did the undead right. It’s time for a new generation of gamers to learn how horrific a swarm of mindless corpses can be when limited on ammo, help, and visibility.
