Squad-based titles were pretty much DOA once the SOCOM series lost its buzz. Then the game category, along with the industry received a wakeup call in the form of Epic Game’s universally acclaimed shooter. As the Xbox 360’s killer IP, Gears of War was met with tons of fanfare due impart to its marvelous graphics, phenomenal cover system, and vigorous sound design. Granted the game’s storyline was considered broad, the inclusion of squad commands forced players to familiarize themselves with team-centric combat, as they moved forward on a mission to save humanity against the Locust Horde. —AG
