There Will Be No Real Heroes or Villains
Observing the films posters and previews, it seems quite obvious that an epic battle between chimps and humans is about to take place. Which means there has to be a good side and a bad side. The film is set up in a world where apes are the dominant class and humans now live in fear, becoming the “apes in the glass” being watched by the superior leaders of society.
However, the problem lies with where can the audience draw empathy. Yes, Caesar holds a grudge because of the way he views humans due to the previous events with the initial destruction of his family—resulting in the ape revolution. Still, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will exhibit several emotional angles including the question of humanity and where does it lie. The apes do go on to create their own sense of humanity, which steadily escapes the humans. Taking these visuals into account, the viewers can only ask themselves, given the circumstance of the first film: Which race will win us over in the end?
