Since J.J. Abrams is busy adding to the Star Wars universe, Roberto Orci will take on the duties of both writing and directing the sequel to Star Trek Into Darkness. The last time we saw the crew of the Enterprise, they were about to embark on a five-year exploration mission into deep space, and according to Orci, that is where he wants to take the next film. In a recent interview, the idea of taking the story into deep space sounded appropriate to Orci for the sake of the maturity of the franchise and the characters.

“The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space… they are in deep space now, so lets see what’s out there.”

Star Trek 3 is set for release in 2016.
