Star Citizen Going To Be A 100Gb Download

This massive, extensive, never-ending crowdfunding campaign that is Star Citizen is apparently going to be a 100 gigabyte download. That’s right. To get some perspective on size, that is 1/5th of the entire Xbox One and PS4 hard-drive.

The PC MasterRace will be the first to point out that all great gaming PC’s have much bigger hard-drives than the consoles but still, when the average game is around 30-40gb, the 100gb download is still astounding in size.

I think I should mention that Star Citizen still doesn’t have a release date, which is curious considering they already know the relative size of the download but its Star Citizen, they have been granted relative free reign on release and will probably be beloved no matter how its final form turns out.

For those interested, here is the full quote from the games director, Jeremy Masker:

“As I have already said, I would not count on this. (This being a reference to a fan asking if the download will still be 40 gb).The game compression and asset removal is unlikely to yield such high gains that we will be able to reduce our client size to 30-40GB. The size and number of assets that are left to deliver means that our client size is much more likely to be 100GB. Also, yes we are optimizing game patching for speed and to only deliver diffs, but this is unlikely to reduce actual patch size. Again, each patch has 100’s of assets, each of these assets are at times 200mb, this leads to 2-6gb patches, and if we end up doing a file type re-factor and have to re-download 30-40% of the assets on the hard-drive, then the patch will be 14-20gb.”
