Those looking forward to the new Mazda MX-5 model are in for a treat, as the luxury vehicle is set to have a 1.3-litre, four cylinder SkyActiv petrol engine under the hood when it hits salesroom floors in 2014. So what does that mean? Aside from offering powerful performance specs, the small direct-injection turbine will feature lighter, low-friction reciprocating parts, variable cam phasing, and a new exhaust manifold, which is expected to “achieve more effective exhaust gas evacuation.” Transmission is said to offer reduced friction, while a “highly-efficient” paddle-shift torque-converter auto with lock-up clutch is being expected as well.
