Gmail App Redesigned

Word around the web is that Google will be releasing a new UI (User Interface) for Gmail on Wednesday. The new look has been whispered about since Google I/O and some pics of the presumed new look were recently posted by Android Police.

The new interface features a tabs system that will automatically sort emails as they come in and put them in their designated tab. Early indications say that the tabs will be labeled as follows:

Primary – emails from family, friends, & other communication that can’t be categorized.
Social – emails and notifications from social media: Twitter, Facebook, etc…
Promotions – retailers, merchants, sales, etc…
Notifications – payment confirmations, bill notices, reservations, etc…
Forums – forums or message boards

There will also be changes to the mobile experience, as apps will have a new menu that allows users to find their emails through these new categories.

With Outlook just going through its own facelift and other programs offering email filtering like XonoMail, it was time for Gmail to get a tune up. We will see Wednesday just how good the new service is, if launched.
