Microsoft buys Nokia

What was once thought to be a done deal back in June has finally come to fruition, as Microsoft has put in a $7.2 billion bid to take over Nokia’s phone business. The acquisition provides the software giant with the essential hardware supporter its Windows Phone 8 mobile OS has desperately needed. In addition, it’s been said that over 18,00 employees will be transferring over from Nokia to Microsoft in the coming months.

Current Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, shared in thoughts in an email, stating the transaction was “a bold step into the future” and that “now is the time to build on this momentum and accelerate our share and profits in phones.” Microsoft is also expected to keep its mobile platform open to other third-party manufacturers like HTC, promising each partner would be treated in as equal.

Could we possibly see the two forces working on a future Surface smartphone? Time will tell.
