Marvel vs Capcom 2 Mixtape: Info, Tracklist, Amazement, Dissapoinment.

We told you about the free promotional mixtape a few weeks ago when it was announced at Comic-Con and we we’re excited when we did. But now that two of the ten announced tracks have surfaced on the web, our excitement is quickly turning to ear gouging dread.

Before we get into what went wrong, here’s what looked so right; the Tracklist.

Marvel vs Capcom 2: Fight the Good Fight
1. “Superheroes” by Planet Asia and DJ Toure
2. “Number One” by Havoc and Nyce
3. “Terrorize” by Raekwon and Ohno
4. “The Remainder is One” by Random, Blaze Rock and Storyville
5. “Reinforcements” by DJ Qbert
6. “Take U 4 A Ryde” by Talib Kweli and Ohno
7. “Battle Drum” by Hieroglyphics
8. “Fight the Good Fight” by The Grouch and Eligh
9. “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To” by E40 and DroopE
10. “Power Up” by MC Supernatural

With lyrical juggernauts like MC Supernatural and Kweli, spitters like E40 and Reakwon, the classics with the Hieroglyphics crew, Planet Asia and Havoc, and underground hitmakers Grouch, Eligh and Ohno this mixtape seemed like a treat on top of the re-release of one of the greatest 2d fighters of all time. But then we were hit with this:

Granted it’s a free mixtape we still expected more than inaccurate game references (sentinel was never a secret character in MvC2) an obvious lack of knowledge about anything Marvel related (Jubilee dosent fight for freedom, she isn’t even in the game for fucks sake) and drudgingly boring production. With a game as fast paced as MvC2 a heavily synthed, slow tempo bass loop just isn’t a good look. Moving on to the second single.

Again we get the same issues with production. It’s not inspired by the game which, by all accounts, it should be. Lyrically Grouch and Eligh save face by just tossing the whole notion that this is a mixtape for a video game almost entirely out the window. Normally we’d frown on that but after listening to Planet Asia butcher the lore of MvC, we’ll let em slide.

So yea, the first two tracks are a poor showing. But on some real shit, most MvC2 fans are to busy duking it out online or realizing how terrible the 360 controller is for pulling of hyper combos to really care about the mixtape which will be available on PSN and XBLA August 13th.

But we’re not all about pointing out problems and offering no solutions here at Evolve. Nah, here’s a group of MC’s who do justice to comic book heroes. And yes we know they have some DC persona sprinkled in as well.
