It’s official. Marvel’s most infamous baddie in The Avengers universe, Thanos, has been given a voice for his role the Guardians of the Galaxy. And the lucky actor to score the gig: Josh Brolin, Up until now, Thanos was the only character to not be teased in previews or trailers for the film, and the revelation of his character has prompted speculation regarding future installments in the series.

Thanos first appeared at the end of The Avengers, and is obsessed with the “physical embodiment of death”. As a member of The Eternals, who are portrayed as “god-like” characters with powers far superior to those of humans, Thanos is “capable of manipulating time, space, reality, and even the human soul.” He’s also known as the “Mad Titan” in the comics.

Sources suggest Thanos will be on screen, alongside the Infinity Gauntlet, which has not appeared since the New Avengers Volume 3 in April 2013. James Gunn reports that the character sits on a rocket throne late in the film, which suggests a more involved role requiring the voice of Brolin.

Whether Brolin has signed for multiple films has yet to be unveiled, though many anticipate he will be involved in one of future Avengers sequels. So it’s likely Guardians of the Galaxy may not be the last time moviegoers see this, “complex, but very purple-skinned alien villain” on screen.
