According to Jeff Sneider (on the Meet The Movie Press podcast), Aqauman is responsible for saving Superman. The whales that lifted the Kryptonian god to the surface were under the command of water deity. Though we didn’t get a chance to see Aquaman work his magic, we can expect an appearance from him in the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Sneider also dropped another fact about the hero that will be swimming to us soon.
