Words by Angelina Montanez

Video games get a bad rap. Dating back to the creation of the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) in 1994, titles like Night Trap, Mortal Kombat, and Doom have been on the receiving end of grave criticism for exposing child and adult gamers to excessively violent, sexual, and controversial acts. Nowadays, it’s blockbusters such as Call of Duty, Halo, and even Nintendogs that have all fallen under the same attacks—with everyone from politicians to criminals pointing the blame at game developers for the recent turn of tragic and ridiculous events that have transpired over the several years.

Now with talks of President Obama pushing Congress to fund research on the impact of video games, plus numerous others coming forward using the virtual entertainment platform as an excuse for their reckless actions, the gaming industry looks to remain the official scapegoat for society’s ills. But the gaming community and other social activists believe there’s much more to these occurrences—claiming lack of common sense, bad parenting, and even mental illness as real influential factors.

Truthfully, it’s a topic that will forever be debated. We’re just here to play the defense. And judging from the previous catastrophes linked to the subject, you just gotta shake your head for the sake of rationality. From cancer to poor athlete performances, take a look at the 10 Most Ridiculous Things Blamed on Video Games.
