The Dungeoning

8. The Dungeoning

Platform: Steam
Price: $12

Games like The Dungeoning exist to remind us we don’t need complex stories and deep ideas to still enjoy quality products. It has nothing in the way of a narrative: you press start and find yourself a knight in a dungeon, with no objective other than trying to get to the end of the level. However, The Dungeoning more than makes up for its lack of story with gameplay that’s incredibly challenging, but also very rewarding. Each level is randomly generated, and once you die, the level is entirely erased, so each time you play you get a different challenge. And it’s also very difficult, as monsters are plentiful and strong while the player only has a single life. The game’s pixelated graphics harken back to classic dungeon platformers, but the procedurally generated levels and high difficulty level give of a more challenging feel that only gluttons for punishment can appreciate.
