Douchiest moment: Joking about the lack of women on Twitter’s board of directors.
Little known fact: Twitter had no female investors or women on its board of directors till last December. Unfortunately, it’s not unheard of for tech companies to have a disappointing number of women in high positions. Upon the media pressing the issue at the time, Costolo decided to weigh in through (of course) Twitter. He took several swipes at writer Vivek Wadhwa, comparing him to Carrot Top, then went on to argue with multiple users, including Wadhwa directly saying that this issue needs to be more than “checking a box.” It only made him look even more chauvinistic and douchey.
