MacRumors is reporting on some whispers concerning the iPad 3 sporting a high-res 2048×1536 display, pointing to another report from Forbes stating Apple has invested $500 million to $1 billion and will let Sharp produce a new low-powered touchscreen. Here’s an excerpt from the Forbes report:

Also, we believe that Apple and Sharp together have a modified IGZO (indium, gallium, zinc) technology to achieve 330 dpi, which is sufficient for an HD display while not using IPS nor having to include dual-bar LED backlighting. In our view, this should lead to several design advantages, namely the device can be thinner, battery life should be longer, and the overall experience for users should be meaningfully improved.

Another rumor circling the web is in regards to the iPad 3’s new form factor, which is said to be measured at 0.7 mm in order to accommodate the tablet’s dual-light bar design. It’s well known that Apple is looking to work with Sharp, so a new iPad display seems almost certain. The new size might still be up for questioning, considering the minor trim Apple gave the iPad 2’s figure. No word yet on when the iPad 3 is said to be released, but previous rumors have it slated for a Spring release.
