Retro-Active: WWF Wrestlefest

Wrestling games back in the day were as rare as seeing blood spilled all over the arcade screens. To see the WWF actually release one was an ever bigger rarity. But when they released Wrestlefest back in 1991, they put the Perfect Plex on us.

Each wrestler had their own set of special moves (minus their spectacular finishers) and memorable taunts, causing fans to sink quarters quicker than last NWO reunion. Tag Team Mode was no joke, as every duo had to bring their best against the likes of Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, The Demolition, and finally the Legion of Doom (whose difficulty was the equivalent to The Undertaker’s in Wrestlemania 2000 for the N64). But the game’s greatest feature came from its Royal Rumble mode, which featured up to 8 players in the ring, creating nonstop chaos all across the ropes.

Now you know where Japan’s Firepro Wrestling and Saturday Night Slammasters got its mojo from. Looking at Wrestlefest in motion till this day is still an impressive sight. They don’t make wrestling games as good as these. But much respect to the N64 wrestling titles of course.
