Retro-Active: Rastan

This Conan the Barbarian rip-off made you forget about Arnold’s overrated adventures. Rastan reintroduced us to the mythological period, where gamers took control of a warrior on a quest to save his a princess and save his homeland from the bloodthirsty beasts and armor-clad warriors of Semia.

Axes, fire swords, hammers and magic—after killing each enemy you literally stole their armor and weapons. Climb ropes, swing across water streams, hurdle through fire pits and borough through the ground—the only thing missing was backflips and double jumps. Game developer Taito introduced beautiful backgrounds and detailed graphics that made the game a visual masterpiece for its time.

Rastan was ported to almost every system (minus the NES), but its greatest shine came from the Sega Master System version. It was one of the first platformers to introduce blood and female nudity (ohh-la-la) in a videogame, but that never scared the game’s image as a great action platformer.
