Retro-Active: Herzog Zwei

Real-time strategy is so underrated. So with that said we pay homage to one of the most addictive RTS titles of the 16-bit generation: Herzog Zwei. As the pilot of a an aircraft “transformer”, gamers purchase combat units and issue commands for each one, capturing numerous outposts and fighting enemy carriers all at once.

The option to play single player or two-player mode (head-to-head) made the Sega classic one of the greats. The ability to transform your vehicle anytime and anywhere, while purchasing new upgrades, airlifting other vehicles and shooting enemy carriers, only made the chaos on your screen worth wild. Accomplishing an ending was the most difficult task, as you were forced to beat the computer four times on each level to reveal one of the several open conclusions, depending on your actions oh course. Now that’s ahead of its time.

Every level is fashioned to keep players on their A-game, as the landscapes and interactive environments keep you aware of your surroundings. With so much progressing onscreen, you’d be prone to develop ADD playing Herzog Zwei. Sega should do us a solid and get a DS version in the works.
