Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord have a critically acclaimed moneymaker on their hands. The LEGO Movie has earned north of $400 million worldwide at the box-office and is in contention for the Best Animated Feature prize at various awards circuits. The combination of box-office success and prestigious recognition usually means one thing: the possibility of a sequel. Well, The LEGO Movie 2 is in the works, even though Miller and Lord are unlikely to return as the directors. They are however, keeping busy on writing the sequel, which apparently will take place four years after Emmitt, Wyldstyle, Batman, Vitruvius and the rest of the collection of kooky and bricky characters defeated the evil plans of President Business.

We were really interested in what happens to that boy who’s in the meta story in the first movie when he’s four years older. When he’s an adolescent how does that change his point of view? And it’s nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence.

In addition to the LEGO Movie sequel, a Ninjago feature and LEGO Batman Movie are also in production and will make their way into theaters by 2016 and 2017. No word on who is going to direct the sequel, let alone when it will be ready for release, or whether or not the cast from the first movie including Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Will Arnett, or Elizabeth Banks will return.
