Despite generating a nice $400 million worldwide, many considered Pacific Rim a failure at the box office. Well, just the film studios, but anyways. And while Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have yet to greelight a sequel, that hasn’t stopped filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro from starting work on a script for Pacific Rim 2. The critically acclaimed director has been working on the story alongside Travis Beacham, sharing some insight with BuzzFeed on what the duo have in mind for the flick.

“I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beachman was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul [he now works on the Fox show ‘Heiroglyph’].”

All that’s known about the follow-up is it won’t be a prequel and will pick where we last saw Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). Oh yea, Del Toro also promises more kick-ass robot action: “I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one, but you will get really great spectacle.”

Let’s hope WB and Legendary get onboard with the vision.
