Google Buys Motorola For $12.5 Billion

Google’s been on spending spree as of late, but its latest acquisition of mobile heavyweight, Motorola, could be its biggest move. The search engine behemoth dropped a mean $12.5 billion to pick up the mobile manufacturer, which also supports Google’s Android OS, and will inherit all of its patents and relevant IPs. CEO Larry Page shared the news on Google’s blog:

This acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business. Many hardware partners have contributed to Android’s success and we look forward to continuing to work with all of them to deliver outstanding user experiences.

This could easily be looked at as the biggest move in mobile history, but what we’re all wondering is if Google will allow its Android operating system to be featured on future third-party handsets. This should be an interesting development to follow, especially if you’re a Samsung or HTC owner.
