After the success of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes this past summer, Andy Serkis (Caesar) recently spoke with MTV about the future of the franchise. Dawn surpassed its predecessor in the global box office, received stronger reviews, and has maintained some of the highest fanfare of the year.

In talking about future films, Serkis said, “It might be three films. It could be four. It could be five. Who knows. The journey will continue…eventually we know that we’re going to end up back at Planet of the Apes, but whether it’s this film or not, I don’t know.”

The next film is set for release on July 29th, 2016, and does not have a finished script as of now, according to Serkis. He explained, “It’s very difficult to know where the story is going right at this moment because it’s being written as we speak.” For now, fans will have to wait and see what the 2016 sequel brings to theaters and the future of the franchise.
