Transistor

3. Transistor

Platforms: PC and PlayStation Network
Price: $20

The first title from Supergiant Games since 2011’s fan-fav Bastion, Transistor easily lives up to the high expectations set by its predecessor. The pseudo-isometric layout makes it initially look similar to other titles, but this IP utilizes more action-RPG elements: including the integration of a turn-based strategy mode into real-time combat. Transistor’s hand-drawn art style looks phenomenal, while the game’s score, which mixes electronica and jazz, perfectly complements the futuristic and off-kilter atmosphere of Cloudbank City. Despite the game’s world being fully realized and fully detailed, Transistor intentionally drops you into the action with little context or explanation, and much of its charm comes from exploring and learning about the universe. Though the case of characters is small—Cloudbank City has been abandoned at the time of the game’s events—they are well developed and memorable, especially the dour, depressed narrator, who also happens to be your giant sword.
