Nidhogg is a lot like another title on this list, in that it graphically harkens back to an earlier point in video game history, while showcasing the polished gameplay one expects from a game released in modern times. Sword fights move at a lightning pace, and players are offered a variety of ways to disembowel their opponents from throwing their sword to ripping out their enemies’ hearts with their bare hands. However, every offensive move has a defensive counterpart, and the stages each encompass five separate rooms, ensuring that fights can last a long time. Nidhogg boasts online multiplayer as well, plus a fully developed single-player mode. For all its seeming graphical simplicity, Nidhogg earns its place as one of the best fighting games of 2014.
