Retro-Active: Wario Land 3

Somewhere in the midst of the Nintendo universe lies a great platformer that wasn’t a Mario game. Best of all, its a GameBoy Color exclusive. That game is Wario Land 3. The overweight and musclebound nemesis of Mario crashes into the woods and stumbles across a mystical cave, where a magical music box is discovered that sucks our anti-superhero in. A mysterious voice warns Wario about collecting all the music boxes and treasure in ordered to be freed.

Where Mario would break bricks for power-ups and collect coins for 1-ups, Wario would snack off his enemies goodies and exploit his powers to break through walls and overpower his adversaries. Traveling through 4 worlds (North, South, East and West), gamers found themselves collecting numerous treasures and still collection coins, except this time, currency was spent to play Gold minigames; Wario must knock his enemies into the a cup without going over par and avoiding course obstacles like lava and bunkers. Already sounds like a recipe for a great Mario Golf game.

Praised as one of the best platformers of all-time, Wario Land 3 was a true portable gem. The enticing, and yet deceitful storyline was a totally different route from the playful Mario stories, and proved Wario was more than an excuse to create a third party character to throw into the latest Mario Party titles. He’s a very intriguing one indeed. Definitely one, if not, the biggest GBC game to ever be released.
