Our friends at Entertainment Weekly snag another exclusive, giving us a first glimpse of another popular Middle Earthian featured in the upcoming The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Evangeline Lilly, famous for her role in the ABC series Lost, will join the cast as the leader of the Elven guard: Tauriel. The character is a Sylvan elf, which is a lower class of elves than we’ve seen in the films like Erwen or Legolas. “She’s slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn’t hesitate to kill,” says Lilly.
The character doesn’t appear in any of the original stories written by Tolkien and was created specifically for the movie, so purists might be in an uproar if it doesn’t work. But from the pics, Tauriel will end up on some screensavers soon. The film hits theaters December 13th.
