In a time where movie studios are recycling everything to repurpose it for the big screen, Universal might have out done them all. We’ve seen movies based on video games, or movies based on anime, even movies based on classic books. But have you ever seen a movie, based on an anime that was based on a game that was based on a classic? Universal is set to do so by bringing Dante’s Inferno to the big screen.
In 2010, Electronic Arts created a video game based on Dante Alighieri’s classic and bane of many a literature student’s day, Divine Comedy,/em>. It told the tale of a crusader who must go through the nine circles of Hell to save the soul of his beloved. On the same day of the game’s release an accompanying animated epic based on the game was released. Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic took a page from the Animatrix and Batman: Gotham Knight and had 6 acclaimed Anime directors take the reigns.
The film is set to be directed by Fede Alvarez, who brought this year’s remake of The Evil Dead to life and will be based on the EA version of the game. I guess EA’s version seemed more entertaining than the classic.
