It’s easy for any title to get lost in the shuffle when sharing the same holiday release window as Halo, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. But even without a strong promotional push, Pyro Studios real-time tactics sequel held its weight on all gaming platforms courtesy of its alert AI, expanded options, and stunning level design, which evoked the intensity of WWII. The steep learning curve pissed off everyone, but its daunting missions and overall difficulty level accommodated those shortcomings. —AB
